A 2020 German study showed that while LGBTQ-identified individuals are highly educated, one in three individuals experienced discrimination at work. How can Berlin deliver on its reputation as an LGBTQ-friendly for not only culture but workplaces? We’ll survey some of the initiatives that startups and tech communities in Berlin have taken up to create more inclusive workplaces to gather top global talents.

Empowerment & Diversity as a mindset – From Buzzword to Action

Tuesday, 5 October

Diversity is a heavily discussed topic in 2021. Study after study shows that diverse teams make better business decisions and produce better outcomes. But how far have we come while speaking about it? Spoiler: A 2019 survey showed that only 7% of German startups are led by a mixed team, compared to 85% all-male teams. If mixed teams actually make more money, why is change so slow? How can diversifying boards and hiring practices along gender, sexuality, race, disability and neurodiversity make a difference? Who do young STEM workers actually want to work for? This panel, our we will discuss the nuances of intersectional identities and how they move beyond ticking boxes to impacting team culture.

Building cross-border communities and entrepreneurial networks

Tuesday, 5 October

3:15-4:00

Communities are built from shared identities and serve as support networks for individuals who may identify as entrepreneurs, people of color, LGBTQ, or professionals from industries like tech. As Berlin continues to grow as a startup and tech hub, how are the talents arriving here finding and building communities to thrive as professionals and entrepreneurs? What are common challenges for founders with intersectional identities in Berlin and Asia and what opportunities are there with today’s cross-border networks to address them?

Please note that we have various panels lined up and we will keep updating this list with more details.
